Boosting Immunity with Essential Oils
As the chilly season arrives, bringing its share of sniffles and coughs, it is time to focus on supporting our immune systems. While we wait for the brighter days of summer, here are some of my favourite essential oil remedies to help you feel your best.
Five natural ways to strengthen your immune system
Embrace restful sleep
A sound sleep cycle is crucial for immune health. During sleep, the body produces essential antibodies. Prioritising sleep supports adaptive immunity and helps the body deal with inflammation and infection.
Manage stress effectively
High stress levels can trigger an inflammatory response and weaken the immune system. Raised cortisol levels affect immune responses and reduce the production of beneficial prostaglandins. Aromatherapy offers real support here: a calming candle such as Soothe, built on lavender and eucalyptus, gives the evening a clear signal to slow down.
Stay active
Regular exercise supports immunity, but moderation matters. Excessive physical exertion strains the body, so ease into any new workout routine.
Hydrate wisely
Increase your water intake and limit diuretics like caffeine and alcohol. Proper hydration is essential for overall health and robust immune function.
Choose nutritious foods
Favour fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants over processed foods. High sugar intake can impair the effectiveness of neutrophils, which are critical cells in our immune defence.
Aromatherapy: a supportive ally
Essential oils are not a cure-all, but they can be genuinely supportive across each of those five areas, giving your immune system room to do its work.
Favourite essential oils for immune support
- Lavender: soothing, with anti-inflammatory properties. Promotes sleep.
- Eucalyptus: acts as a decongestant and eases respiratory issues.
- Frankincense: calming, and relieves coughs.
- Rosemary: clears congestion and boosts mental clarity.
- Laurel: supports respiratory health.
- Peppermint: alleviates headaches and sinus congestion.
- Copaiba: promotes relaxation.
- Ginger: eases nausea and aids digestion.
- Lemon: cleansing, and lifts the mood.
- Tea tree: supports the immune system.
You can buy each of these individually from our pure essential oils, and read what each one does before you commit to it.
Using aromatherapy when you are unwell
- Diffusing: a good way to support mood, energy and respiratory health. For some people strong scents can trigger headaches, so listen to your body. A reed diffuser keeps a low, steady scent in the room without a flame.
- Steam inhalation: a traditional remedy for respiratory issues. Inhaling warm vapour can loosen mucus and relieve congestion.
- Topical application: mix essential oils with a carrier oil for a massage, or add them to your bath, always properly diluted.
A soothing vapour bath recipe
Mix 2 cups of Epsom salts, 1 cup of Dead Sea salts and 1 cup of bicarbonate of soda. In a separate bowl, blend 2 tablespoons of body wash with 15 drops of eucalyptus, 10 of lavender, 6 of peppermint, 6 of tea tree and 2 of blue tansy. Combine the mixtures and store in a jar. Use half a cup in your bath for a 20-minute soak. If you enjoy making things by hand, our London workshops teach the same blending principles in person.
Wellness comes first
Essential oils are a complementary tool, not a replacement for healthy habits. They support your immune system alongside sleep, movement, hydration and good food. Always choose high-quality oils, and consult a healthcare professional for personalised advice.
