The Hidden Truth About Toxins in Candles & How to Find Non-toxic Candles
Most of us light a candle without thinking twice about what is actually burning. But the wax, the wick and the fragrance all end up in the air of a small, closed room, which makes a candle worth a second look.
It is an uncomfortable thought, especially if candles are how you wind down. Vague green marketing and loose labelling rules make genuinely clean candles hard to spot. Here is what to look for, and what to avoid.
Deciphering the candle conundrum
Plenty of candles look appealing and tell you very little. A large number never disclose a full ingredient list, which makes it easy for unwanted compounds to slip in unnoticed.
Regulations focus mainly on burning safety rather than ingredient clarity. The words "fragrance" and "parfum" can cover a long list of synthetic chemicals without naming a single one. When those are burned, you breathe them in.
Even candles that advertise themselves as essential oil infused are not always what they seem. A small amount of essential oil can sit behind a dominant synthetic fragrance and still earn the claim. If a brand cannot tell you which oils are in a candle, that is your answer. Ours are listed one by one in our oil library.
Why your wax choice matters
Candles have been made from natural fats such as tallow for centuries. Today the most common choice is paraffin wax, a by-product of petroleum, and its combustion can release compounds such as toluene and benzene.
Soy wax is often held up as the greener alternative, but it is not without issues. Large-scale soy farming has a real environmental cost, and processing can involve agents such as hexane.
Yougi candles are made with Eco-Soy wax for a cleaner burn and a lighter footprint. Wicks matter too: many commercial wicks are chemically treated to burn for longer, which is worth asking about before you buy.
